Hario Polaris Coffee Scale

Hario was founded in Tokyo in 1921 as a maker of heatproof glass and is best known for the V60 dripper. Over the years it has built a range of brewing equipment around the V60, from servers and kettles to grinders and scales, and the Polaris joined that range in 2024. It is a coffee scale that fits into a home brewing setup: it weighs up to 2 kg in 0.1 g steps and can work out how much water your recipe needs.

A scale is one of the most useful first pieces of equipment for brewing at home, because weight, not volume, is what makes a recipe repeatable. The Polaris suits pour over, a French press, an AeroPress, a moka pot or a batch of cold brew, and with 0.1 g readability it also weighs an espresso dose and shot.

In Polaris mode you weigh your coffee and set a ratio from 1:1 to 1:30, in 0.5 steps. The scale works out the total water and shows your progress as a percentage up to 100%. There is no need to tare between pours, and recipes are easy to repeat: five equal pours are 20% each, whatever the dose.

The timer starts with the first pour or by hand. Classic mode shows only time and weight, a slide switch turns the beep on or off, and the scale works without an app.

The 127 × 165 mm platform takes a dripper with its V60 Range Server, a French press or a moka pot. On an espresso machine, check that your drip tray takes the platform and that the 27 mm height leaves room for your cup under the portafilter.

It runs on three AA batteries (a starter set is included), which Hario rates at about 10 months with six minutes of use a day.
