Cooperative Story

The Musema Cooperative is located in the Kayanza province of northern Burundi not far from the town of Ngozi. It was the first cooperative established in Burundi and consists of 250 members who supply cherries to the washing station. It was initially supported by the NGO “Food for the Hungry” which provided farmer support, training, and agricultural education.

Bean There began purchasing coffee from Musema in 2011 and we have seen the demand for this exceptional coffee increase every year since. The cooperative is small but committed to excellence which can be seen in the agronomy training made available to farmers, and the improvements in processing techniques at the washing station, including using Ecopulpers which use less water than conventional pulpers.

We have visited Musema regularly since 2011 and we are encouraged to see the development and growth of the cooperative which has resulted in increased yields, improved quality and increased income to farmers. We currently purchase all the coffee that Musema can produce and although the cooperative has no official certification Bean There is committed to paying a Direct Fair Trade premium to the farmers.
